My Story

My  story  with Chiropractic care began about 30 years ago.  It was in the spring of 1980, I was a college football player at Jacksonville State University in  Alabama.  Spring training for football involves many hours in the weightroom,  doing exercises like bench press, dead lifts and squats.  In an effort to protect our knees from injury we were told to do squats onto a bench that stopped us from going too low and over stressing our knees.   The bench did protect our knees but it  caused another problem,  when we hit the bench the weights on our shoulders caused a dramatic increase in compression forces on our lower backs.  It was one of these lifts with over 750 lbs. on my back that I ruptured the L5 disc.

I didn't know that I had a ruptured disc (there were no MRI's in the 80's) and I didn't feel pain immediately, it just felt like a catch or my back felt like it didn't move right.  A couple of days later my back began to ache, then my left leg began aching and burning and tingling.  Over the next 3 weeks the pain got worse and worse until it was almost unbearable.  Activities like sitting in class or driving my car were the worst, lying  down seemed to help a bit  until  it started to feel like it was burning or numb or tingling, but sometimes these were better than the relentless pain.  Our team chiropractor Dr. Lett from Glencoe, AL. would lay me on my side and pop my back, at the time I didn't understand what he was doing and I didn't care, all I knew was it felt better for a little while.  I also went to my grandmothers chiropractor when I was not at school,  she would also pop my back and it would relieve some of the pain.

The pain in my back and leg would come and go over the next 3 months until it just gradually disappeared, and I completely forgot about it.  I did keep getting adjusted because it felt good afterword.  A few years later I decided to go to chiropractic school myself.  It had certainly helped me and I had an interest in natural health care and exercise since childhood.  At my first examination at chiropractic school, the doctor looked at my x-rays and said that about 10 years ago I had suffered a ruptured disc.  I knew immediately what he was talking about but I asked him how he knew it had been ruptured.  He said looking at the developing bone spurs, the roughened joint surfaces and the thinning out of the L5 disc was how he could tell.  He said it had been so severe that my L5 vertebra had fused to part of my pelvis and was not moving anymore.  This was not good news to me.

By this time I was understanding how these back problems progress and the problems they cause with my nervous and immune systems, causing accelerated aging and I didn't want that to happen to me.  I began reading studying researching anything I could find to prevent, stop or at least slow down this health problem.  I continue to research constantly, sometimes taking 10 times the required amount of continuing education hours.  I have developed a combination of therapies, including laser, infrared, non surgical decompression and gentle adjusting techniques to achieve the best outcome for both myself and each patient that I serve. At first I saw my back problems as a curse, causing lowered ability, certainly less enjoyment, possible disability or even a shorter life span.  But I now look at my problems as a blessing,  because I have lived with this problem for 30 years; studied it intensely for 15 years and helped at least 6000 people also deal with it professionally for the last 12 years, I am uniquely qualified to assist you in conquering this problem that you  have.
